ESPORÃO’S SYRAH 2011 COMES OUT TOP FOR REVISTA DE VINHOS’ TASTING PANEL

In this month’s Revista de Vinhos, the magazine’s tasting panel turns its attention to the Syrah grape, with Herdade do Esporão’s wine scoring highest with 17.5 points.

In its January edition, Revista de Vinhos’ tasting panel chose to focus on the Syrah grape, which has become increasingly popular among producers and wine drinkers in Portugal. The consistency of this variety and its ability to adapt to the country’s mild climate has seen 50 hectares of the grape planted at Herdade do Esporão. According to David Baverstock, our head winemaker, Syrah is “generally an excellent variety”. The blend for Esporão’s Private Selection has included this grape for some years now.

However, the potential and original character of Syrah is best appreciated in varietals. This grape, which is also known as Damaszener blau or Marsanne noir, among other names, shows its complexity, not only in its synonyms but also in its great versatility, providing winemakers with the possibility of countless interpretations, producing wines with a real difference.

The Esporão winemaking team’s interpretation of the grape saw their Syrah 2011 score highest with the panel: 17.5 points. Produced only in exceptional years, and with grapes from unique plots, it was the wine chosen by Nuno Oliveira Garcia, who said that “this Syrah shines very, very brightly”.

Esporão’s Syrah varietal can be found in any specialised wine shop or at Herdade do Esporão’s wine tourism shop.
